The Irish Rugby Legends - An IntroductionDeveloping Grass Roots RugbyThe main pupose of the Legends brand world wide is to highlight the need to support amateur rugby at all levels. At present most money generated by rugby goes toward the professional code of the game which caters for less than 1% of the players. This we feel has led to the neglect of the amateur code on a world wide scale. It is now time to focus on the full spectrum of rugby from schools, clubs and the veteran players who have played the game for over 30 years for combat, camaraderie, the love of the game and most importantly FUN. This has been acknowledged in part by the Irish Rugby Football Union and as such they have determined this year as being the "Year of the Club". The Irish Rugby Legends has been formed by a group of ex-international players as a vehicle for ex-players in Ireland to put something back into Rugby. Our aim is to promote the brotherhood of amateur rugby across all sectors of the rugby playing fraternity and promote the ethos that: "Every Year Must Be The Year of the Club" Irish Legends are committed to putting all profits generated back into grass roots rugby.

The IRB is very pleased that past players are giving their time to assist the development of club rugby and contributing to the development of rugby in the wider community. Rugby is only professional at the very elite top end and the role of the volunteer cannot be underestimated in the development of grass roots rugby and such initiatives are to be welcomed.
Schools and amateur rugby is the foundation on which our proud rugby heritage was built. The relevance, development and nurture of amateur rugby are as important today, in the modern era of professionalism, as it was a decade ago. Therefore I will, on behalf of the South African Rugby Union, endorse any initiative that is aimed at growing and strengthening the wonderful game of amateur rugby.
